FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Thank you for your interest in services at Brow Envy! Below are some of the most common asked questions regarding services. PLEASE make sure to read everything in its entirety BEFORE booking any appointment to ensure you are a good candidate and are fully prepared ahead of time.

  • Microblading is a technique of permanent makeup designed to cosmetically enhance your natural eyebrows. It is considered a tattoo and fades over time. A small blade is used to create fine hair-like strokes throughout the brow. This method is ideal for those looking to improve their existing shape giving the illusion of a fuller, natural brow.

Microblading is meant to be a subtle and natural enhancement. It looks best on clients who already have semi full brow hair. The more hair you have, the more natural it will appear. Microblading heals best on young, healthy, and dry/normal skin.

Those with oily skin, aging/thin skin, and little to no brow hair are not recommended for microblading. Results will not heal as well or look as natural. These skin types are a better candidate for the combination/powder brows.

Many clients think microblading is the only way to achieve “natural” results. However, when a client isn’t an ideal candidate, microblading can look more unnatural than something like a combination/powder brow. If you do not fit the above description of an ideal microblading candidate, book a combination/powder brow!

*It is also very important to note that microblading, over time, is very likely to blur together on almost anyone. While the strokes may look crisp and thin initially, if you have oily skin, aging skin, are in the sun frequently, the strokes will eventually blur together. Microblading can typically be done by itself 4-5 times before a client should switch to a combination/powder brow to avoid scar tissue build up. We cannot guarantee microblading results for anyone.

  • A combination brow combines microblading strokes with machine shading throughout. A powder brow has no microblading/hair strokes and is made up entirely of machine shading. Both are ideal for ALL skin types, and heal very soft and beautiful.

Like any permanent makeup, combination/powder brows can still fade over time. However, these styles typically last several years depending on your skin type. If you have oily skin, large pores, uneven brow hair growth, or very coarse hair, microblading/hair-strokes on its own can look very unnatural and won’t blend with the natural hair. It can lead to blotchy, uneven pigment saturation in the skin, and blurred results.

With a combination/powder brow, we can customize and layer pigment until the desired amount of saturation is achieved. This helps blend out any unevenness in the growth and gives more realistic results. It is also ideal for those wanting a more defined or filled in brow. These methods create the least amount of trauma, and fades the best over time!

*If you are unsure of what service to book, a combination/powder brow is the safest choice!

  • This is a form of permanent makeup that enhances the beauty of your natural lip color, improves shape of lips, and gives definition. It does not make lips fuller as injections would, but they will look slightly bigger as we enhance your vermilion border. The color heals super soft and natural. Lip blush is best for people with medium to full lips. Pigments are available in all different shades and customizable to your desired results.

Two sessions are recommended, 6-10 weeks apart. Each session can take 3-4 hours, please make sure to prepare for this by eating beforehand. Lips will be kept numb during the procedure with topical anesthetics.

*BEFORE BOOKING: Fever blisters/cold sores are a common side effect after lip tattooing. If you have ever had fever blisters or cold sores (even years ago), a prescribed anti-viral medication must be started 3-4 days prior to the procedure (i.e. Valtrex). Must not have had filler or injections around mouth/lip area within 30 days before appointment. Please exfoliate daily and moisturize lips 1 week prior to appointment.

  • Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for permanent cosmetics. We want the very best for our clients, and not all skin types accommodate that.  If you are a new client, we will go over all options together and help you choose what service is best for you.

    Clients who are NOT ELIGIBLE:

    • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding

    • Diabetic (unless controlled and okayed by your doctor)

    • Currently using Accutane or have used Accutane/steroids for acne or other skin concerns within the last 2-4 months.

    • Viral infections/ diseases/ sickness (flu/cold)

    • Currently taking blood thinning medications (better candidates for powder brows)

    • Currently undergoing cancer treatments (must be off Chemo or Radiation for 6 months).

    • Psoriasis near the treated area or skin irritations such rosacea, acne, sunburn, eczema, or rashes.

    • HIV/hepatitis, shingles, skin cancer, skin diseases, glaucoma

    • All clients must be at least 18 years old.

    BROW & LIP CONTRAINDICATIONS:

    • Having had Botox/Dyport within 3-4 weeks of brow tattoo.

    • Having had filler or injections around mouth area within 3 months for lip blush tattoo.

    • Use of AHA’s within 10-14 days of your scheduled appointment (lactic, glycolic, citric, retinoic and tartaric acids) or any OTC cleansers, creams, serums and lotions for tone/spot/color correcting, anti-aging, fading or exfoliating, these can discolor your pigment when healing/healed.

    • Use of any topical creams or medications for acne, any form of retinols/Vitamin A within 10-14 days of your scheduled appointment.

    • Doing any harsh facials, peels, laser treatments 2-3 weeks before scheduled appointment.

    • Direct sunlight exposure 3 days before. (No sunburnt skin)

    • No waxing/threading at least 5-10 days prior to your appointment. If you tint your brows, please do so at least 5 days prior.

  • • Oily Skin: Increased oil production can cause hair strokes to blur and fade very quickly, or not hold at all. If you have combination or oily skin, you are a candidate for combination/powder brows, but not for microblading.

    • Sun Exposure: Increased exposure to the sun will cause premature fading. We recommend all clients to use spf to protect healed brows/lips from the sun.

    • Smoking: Smokers may notice that permanent cosmetics fade faster.

    • Excessive Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. It causes pigment to fade very quickly and heal ashy. While bleeding is not entirely in our control, it is important to follow all before care instructions to help minimize bleeding. Including avoiding blood thinning medications 2-3 days before, and alcohol 24 hours before, your procedure.

    • Improper before and after care: Not following the given care instructions before and after will greatly diminish your healed results. Please come prepared before and follow all instructions exactly afterwards for the best results.

    • Anemia and Iron Deficiency: Your body will absorb these iron-based pigments more quickly.

    • Age and Metabolism: The faster your metabolism the faster the pigment will fade.

  • BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT:

    • BOTOX: If you regularly get Botox/Dysport, it must be done at least 3-4 weeks prior to your appointment. If you’ve had it done within that time of your appointment we may need to reschedule.

    • WAXING/THREADING: We recommend coming to your appointment with your brows grown out to see how they grow naturally; we will clean them up for you. If you decide to clean them up before, please do so at least 5-10 days prior to your appointment. If you tint your brows, please do so at least 5 days prior.

    • RETIN-A: Please refrain from using any retin-a/retinol products on your face for 10-14 days leading up to your appointment and after.

    • FACIALS/PEELS/LASER: Do not have any harsh facial treatments done within 2-3 weeks before and after your appointment.

24 HOURS-72 HOURS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT:

    • ALCOHOL: Please avoid any alcohol and excessive caffeine to minimize bleeding during the procedure.

    • MEDICATIONS: Avoid blood thinning medications 72 hours before or immediately after your procedure such as Ibuprofen, Advil and fish oil should also be avoided unless prescribed by a doctor.

    • DIRECTIONS: Please be sure to map directions to our studio. We have a strict 15-minute late policy, so please plan ahead to make sure you know how long the commute to the studio takes, and plan for traffic if appropriate. Please be respectful of our time the same as we are respectful of yours.

    DAY OF YOUR APPOINTMENT:

    • EXERCISE: Avoid exercise right before coming to your appointment, exercising increases blood flow and will cause excessive bleeding, leading to poor healed results.

    • MAKEUP: you can choose to come with or without makeup on. We do take lots of photos, so come however you are most comfortable. If you regularly fill in your brows, coming with them filled in helps us to see your regular shape.

    • SHOWER: Wash your hair! (The night before or morning of) This will give you a head start and help in the healing process so you won’t have to shower right after having your brows/ lips done. (You will need to avoid the following on the brow area for 10-14 days after! Including excessive sweating, pools, lakes, salt water, and extreme sun exposure, so plan your vacations accordingly!)

  • As a precaution, you must obtain and take an anti-viral medication if you have ever experienced a cold sore/fever blisters in your life. (At least 2-3 days prior to treatment, the day-off, and 2-3 days after treatment). Please contact your doctor to prescribe a prescription strength medication if this applies to you.

    • Begin anti-viral medication at least 2-3 days prior to your lip blush appointment.

    • Avoid heavy working out 24 hours before.

    • Avoid alcohol, caffeine or stimulants 24 hours before.

    • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning 3 days before.

To be considered, you MUST attach a clear photo when booking your appointment. *All NEW clients to Brow Envy are considered initial sessions, NOT touch ups.

  • At this time, we do not offer in person consult appointments. You are welcome to text us if you have a specific question or concern. • Permanent makeup typically fades over time, but is still considered a tattoo. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, skincare, metabolism, medications, and pigment color affect the longevity of the tattoo. The sun and some types of lighting (tanning beds) can affect the rate at which the pigments are broken down. Following the given aftercare instructions is a must to getting your best healed results, as well as touch-ups (as needed). Touch-ups are normal and expected. Choosing the correct service for your skin type and following the correct aftercare will lead to beautiful results for years to come!

*Please note that final results vary and CANNOT be guaranteed due to the nature of skin as it heals. A touch-up appointment is required 6-10 weeks after your initial session where we can assess your pigment retention, shape and perfect any changes necessary.

  • Yes! Permanent makeup is at minimum a TWO step process, and a touch up is required to achieve the best results. It literally “completes” everything. The touch up is done 6-10 weeks after your initial session and must be done in this time-frame. This is when we assess your pigment retention, perfect the shape and color, and add more dimension. Touch ups are very important and add to the longevity and overall results. We will book your 6-10 week touch up appointment on the same day of your initial session.

  • Immediately after your appointment, you may experience minor redness or slight swelling around the treated area. This typically goes down within 24 hours. The first few hours pigment will oxidize in the skin (for brows they may look darker, bolder and warmer). This is completely normal and to be expected. You may notice that some areas may appear very light or even to have lost pigment entirely after they have peeled, the epidermis will be thicker causing muting, hiding or diffusing of pigment underneath.

Around day 3-5, you may notice light scabbing and flaking on the treated area. This is normal! Please DO NOT pick at the area. Doing so will result in loss of pigment in those areas and can cause scarring. Brows or lips may appear spotty or patchy until they’re finished healing entirely. Once all flaking is done (usually around day 10), they will appear much lighter.

The pigment will darken over the next 4-6 weeks and you will see the fully healed color. Whatever pigment doesn’t return we can assess at your 6-10 week touch up. We will go over your retention, adjusting pigment color, and touching up any spots necessary. In some cases, some people may need a third session, depending on skin type, how well aftercare is followed and/or their preferences/desired look. If necessary, this will be an additional fee.

  • Immediately after your appointment your lips will feel swollen and dry. We recommend using a cool compress (not frozen) be applied for 10 to 15 minutes each hour for the first 4-8 hours following the procedure. (Make sure to wrap compress to avoid direct contact on the skin). This helps reduce swelling and provides comfort. Apply ointment on lips several times a day. This should be done for at least 14 days after treatment. Do not allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. If lips feel dry, apply a liberal amount of ointment. Tapping onto area; do not rub!

No soap, cleanser or shampoo on the treated area for at least 7 days. These are designed to remove any foreign substances and is detrimental to the bonding process required for the pigment to become permanent. Toothpaste and mouthwash are considered “soap” and will remove lip color, so proceed with caution when using. For the first 3 days, coat lips with a liberal amount of ointment before brushing your teeth and use a minimal amount of toothpaste.

Cleansing your lips should be done with a damp paper towel or clean q-tip dipped in cool water and gently blotting the treated area. Do not rub the area in any way.

Apply A & D ointment with a q-tip for the first 24 hours. Then apply Aquaphor for the next 2 weeks several times a day. (Do not use mineral oil or petroleum-based products such as Vaseline.) Try not to let your lips dry out, keep moist all times and re-apply ointment as necessary. Do not press or rub when applying ointment.

    • Avoid steam, hot baths/showers

    • Use a straw for the first 3 days when drinking liquids; avoid biting into fruit or foods that might cause stretching or friction to the lips. Smoking is discouraged for optimal results.

    • Avoid lipstick or cosmetics on or near the treated area for at least 7 days.

    • Avoid sun exposure, swimming in fresh, salt, or chlorinated pool water.

    • Avoid Retin A, retinols for at least 1 month after, it will cause the area to peel and lighten.

Lips are a muscle and may require a touch up session to complete the process. Lip blush is unpredictable and some clients only heal with slight color uptake. This varies on an individual basis. If you have sun damage, scar tissue (from injury or fever blisters) or lip implants, you may not have strong results.

  • While permanent makeup is amazing for defining the brow and enhancing a client’s features, it’s important to have realistic expectations about what it can and cannot do. Permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo, meaning it is going in your skin. Makeup sits on top of your skin. Therefore, some things you can achieve with makeup will not look or have the same effect as a tattoo. Because the tattoo we are creating is relatively permanent and the ink is being implanted under the skin, we want to be careful. It’s also important to note that healed results will always differ from fresh pigment as the skin heals. Permanent makeup is not magic, its best to be on the safe side and do less in order to maintain beautiful results.

*Brow Envy cannot guarantee healed results, final results will vary for everyone. Some makeup/products may still be required to give you the results you desire. Any additional sessions after the initial and included touch up will be charged accordingly.

  • Most people experience little to no pain during the procedure. Although each person has a different level of pain tolerance, we use effective anesthetics throughout to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible.

  • Initial sessions take between 2-4 hours.

Touch up sessions take between 1-3 hours.

  • All clients are expected to follow the given aftercare instructions exactly, this is crucial in obtaining the best results! All aftercare/instructions will be provided to you at your appointment.

    BROW AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS:

On the first day immediately after your appointment, continue to blot the area with a damp paper towel every 1-2 hours for the rest of the day. Gently wash area before bed and apply provided aftercare lotion. Always wash outside of the shower.

Days 1-14: With clean hands, gently rinse the affected area morning and night with cool water and a mild/gentle soap. I recommend Cetaphil or Dial Gold orange liquid). Lightly cleanse in the direction of hair growth, do not scrub! Rinse and gently pat dry.

Apply a rice size amount of aftercare lotion provided with a Q-tip. Less is more, a tiny amount goes a long way!

Follow these important guidelines for the next 10-14 days or until fully healed:

    • No direct sun or tanning beds for 2 weeks. (Please plan vacations and outings accordingly to avoid as much sun as possible.)

    • No swimming pools/hot tubs

    • Keep area as dry as possible (other than when washing), and avoid heavy working out, excessive sweating, saunas, and steam.

    • No makeup, skincare or sunscreen directly on the area for 10-14 days or until fully healed. You may use these around the area, but leave at least one inch around at all times to prevent infection.

    • No picking, scrubbing or peeling the affected area. This will result in pigment loss/scarring. An itchy sensation is normal as skin is repairing itself.

    • Avoid Neosporin, vitamin e, coconut oil, aloe vera.

    • Avoid acne products or any AHA's on or near pigmented areas including glycolic/lactic/salicylic acids, retinols/Retin A. This will cause fading very quickly!

    LIPS BLUSH AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS:

On the first day immediately after your appointment, continue to blot the area with a damp paper towel every hour for the rest of the day. Avoid eating and drinking immediately after your appointment for a few hours (it is recommended to us a straw when drinking to avoid contact).

Days 1-14: Follow these important guidelines for the next 10-14 days or until fully healed:

    • No direct sun or tanning beds for 2 weeks. (Please plan vacations and outings accordingly to avoid as much sun as possible.)

    • No soaps, cleansing creams, or chemicals on lips. Wash your face carefully avoiding the lip area for 10 days.

    • When washing face/brushing teeth, have ointment on the pigmented area to protect lips from water. Do not stand in front of shower head when showering.

    • Avoid fillers, lasers, acne products or any AHA's on or near pigmented areas including glycolic/lactic/salicylic acids, retinols/Retin A for 2-3 weeks. This will cause fading very quickly!

    • No swimming pools/hot tubs

    • Avoid heavy working out, excessive sweating, saunas, and steam.

    • IF prescribed an antiviral medication, complete after your appointment to prevent an outbreak/blisters.

    • You may apply an ice pack (which must be protected with a barrier such as a paper towel, towel or cloth) for 10-minute intervals for the first 48 hours. Ice may be applied every hour or so, if desired. Do not put ice directly on area.

    • Avoid hot soups, drinks, hot coffee for 10 days. Drink everything through a straw until lips completely peel.

    • Avoid biting into large foods, eating spicy/citrus/oily/salty foods and hot temperature foods and drinks until fully healed.

    • Avoid smoking and kissing for 5-7 days.

    • Keep LIPS very hydrated and moisturized continuously all day long until flaking is done. Apply ointment several times a day for at least 10 days post treatment. Don’t allow lips to become dry. This may interfere with healed color. If lips start to feel dry, apply a layer of ointment. Make sure to dab/press onto skin, do not rub.

  • After your initial session and 6–10-week touchup session, most people are able to go 1-3 years between touch up appointments! The lasting results will depend on your skin type, lifestyle, and how well you take care of it. Things like excessive sun exposure and certain skincare products can shorten the life and cause fading into unnatural colors. Making sure to follow long term aftercare instructions ensures looking the best for as long as possible! It is best to go longer than you think and let your pigment fade!

*If you are a previous client at Brow Envy, it’s important to let your brows fade AT LEAST 45-50% before booking any annual touchup, letting the previous ink fade allows us to keep the skin healthier! If the ink in your skin from our previous appointments isn’t faded enough, adding more can cause the entire brow to look blotchy, uneven and cause scar tissue. Let them fade! If you’re ever unsure if you are ready for a touchup or not, send pictures and we will let you know!

  • There is no guarantee as everyone's results vary due to skin type, lifestyle, and the initial 10-day aftercare and long-term care of your permanent makeup.

    • Do not use chemical exfoliants on the brows. This causes the brows/lips to fade faster.

    • Use at least SPF 30 to protect the area. Sun exposure will cause fading and can alter the color of your tattoo.

    • Do not use lasers near your brow/lip area (IPL etc). Some lasers may change the color of the ink.

    • As the tattoo fades, strokes/pigment will get fainter and less defined.

    • Maintenance is required to maintain desired results. Touch-ups are done on average every 1-3 years.

    • Microbladed brows typically last 1-3 years.

  • A lash lift is a lifting technique designed to give you longer looking lashes without the need for lash extensions. This restructures the growth direction of your natural lashes, essentially perming them for a beautiful curl and lift. Includes lift and tint. Results last anywhere from 6-10 weeks.

    Service takes about 1 hour.

  • A brow lamination is the process of restructuring the growth pattern of your natural brow hair. This works for most eyebrow shapes and styles, from full to sparse, and is ideal for anyone looking to improve the shape of their brows. It can help your brow hair to be more manageable and ‘hold’ their shape in certain directions. Includes lamination, wax, trim, and tint. Results last anywhere from 6-12 weeks.

    Service takes about 1 hour.

  • It is best for those with some to full natural lashes or brow hair. We recommend using a lash or brow hair growth serum if necessary to give more noticeable results. (We love Grande lash and Grande brow, both serums are sold at Brow Envy salon!)

    LASH LIFT CONTRAINDICATIONS:

    • Allergies to gel eye pads. Please request a patch test if you’re concerned with irritation to the lifting solution. When in doubt, consult your doctor.

  • Following your treatments do not apply anything or get brows or lashes wet for the first 24 hours. Avoid steam, baths, saunas, and makeup wipes/remover. Do not rub or play with the lashes or brows. We recommend to avoid applying pressure, especially sleeping on the area for the first 24-48 hrs. After this time, you can treat them normally by simply brushing them into place every morning with a spoolie. It is best to use oil-free makeup removers and hydrating mascaras. Do not use waterproof mascara or brow products as this can be too drying.

  • Lashes or brows should not get wet for 24 hours after having the service done.

  • Lash lifts and lash extensions are two very different services. We do not add any additional lashes to yours. We will simply be curling your natural lashes temporarily. That said, for most, it can make your lashes appear fuller because they are so uplifted.

  • It’s important to make sure you go to a licensed and trained professional. If the service is done correctly and carefully, it should not show signs of damage. If the lashes/ brow hairs are weak and/ or damaged before receiving the treatment, it is recommended to wait for them to grow stronger to prevent further damage and over processing. We recommend Grande lash and Grand Brow serums to all of our clients. Sold at our salon!
